Martin,
As you might of seen from the BTS there are a lot of related reports about using non english locales. I have linked these to the upstream reports. However, there doesn't appear to be much action on this issue upstream.
If you can bring up on the other support forum that would be great.

Thanks. If need be I could help debugging... I am subcribe to
hplip-help-ml and could bring up that bug report there. And was not quite
sure whether to report upstream myself and then found that existing
debian bug report...
