Yes, the eventually of having to backport this to stable-updates is
what I was pondering.

Your answer suggests that, on stable, the logs will show this annoying
warning, but operation will not be adversely affected.

I'd still like to hear from the bug submitter before I decide on
backporting anything to stable-updates.
