Hey,

* What mails are reported to be new?
* Are all mails get notified to be new?
* Can you check/attach your akonadi log. If akonadi fails with syning it 
redownloads all messages again and again.
* What imap server you use?
* Do you use offline imap?
* Do you use filters that touch mails?
