Actually default-jdk is a real metapackage, while default-mta is a
pure virtual package. I am not sure which way to pick here now.

It depends on what behaviour you want on dist-upgrade.

A real package will stick arround, so if you switch the default then a dist-upgrade will pull in the new default. On the other hand a virtual package is never installed as such, so existing systems will keep their existing implementation.
