Bug#833865: jessie-pu: package youtube-dl/2014.08.05-1+deb8u1

Package: release.debian.org
Severity: normal

This is a tentative of opening the discussion regarding a more regular
update of the youtube-dl package in Debian stable.

Currently, Youtube-dl does not work in stable: it fails to download
videos from youtube completely. While other sites may work, its
primary purpose simply fails and tells users to ugrade their package
to the latest version using their package manager, which fails because
it *is* the latest version.

An example of this scenario is Bug#781180, which clearly shows the
software doesn't work at all.

Unfortunately, this is a scenario in which providing a small patch to
fix the problem is probably impossible. What I would suggest here is
to simply ship the version from testing as a proposed update for the
next stable release. Note that upstream does not have a stable release
branch, and they make frequent (ie. about monthly) releases which may
be difficult to keep up with. However, I believe the release schedule
of stable may be sufficient to keep up with the largest changes on the
bigger websites.

If youtube-dl cannot be updated in this fashion, then it is my opinion
that it should be completely removed from stable and blocked from
entering testing in the future so that we don't have the same problem
in future releases. It would mean denying users access to an excellent
piece of softwae, however, which would be a shame.

Thanks for considering this request!
