John, I'm still not using UTF8 locale, so please try koi8-r?

I tried both. Also I tried ISO-8859-5. None of them worked.

xset q gives:

Font Path:
  /home/john/.gnome2/share/cursor-fonts,unix/:7100,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi,/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType,/home/john/.gnome2/share/fonts

Of course, I forgot to ask you to check font path! So please describe
FontPath options from your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file here.

     Do you have defoma installed?

Yes.

Ttf fonts are placed into separate place (not into /usr/lib/X11/fonts).

For example, ttf-bistream-vera is installed into
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-bitstream-vera/, and with defoma I set
     FontPath in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to:

     Section "Files"
             FontPath "/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType"

This line wasn't there, so I added it and restarted X. Unfortunately
it made no difference.
