Because with http://auric.debian.org/~bcollins/disks-sparc/current/sparc-mini,iso

and using "stable" instead of "woody" in the initrd:
boot cdrom /boot/sparc64 initrd=/dists/stable/main/disks-sparc/current/images-1.44/root.bin

leads to the "Illegal Instruction: condition.

This is the approach I am taking right now.
I changed the URL to point to http://auric.debian.org/~bcollins/
for the kernel/drivers install step.
So far, so good!
