i have upgraded my screwy machine running slink packages and 2.0.38 kernel, in
past week [5 days of downloading via modem, 2 days of messing with things :)],
i have started with compiling 2.2.5 kernel, installing it and rebooting the
machine, after everything went okay, i used dselect to upgrade all the
packages, there was only 3 things what i had problems with:

the first one was that old version of libpam_misc.so [0.65] did not get removed
so su/login/telnetd was broken, i think that was actually my foult because i
didn't followed the upgrade instruction :) anyway guys from debian-user helped
me fix this within few hours i've posted the first email [thanks for the help].

the second problem was with upgraded exim, the problem was with conf file
changes and the fix was easy, i just ran the eximconfig again and reset the
config.

the last problem still exists and i'm not sure what causes this, but after
upgrading gpm to v1.17 copy/paste feature quit working, i run 2-button z-nix
mouse as '-m /dev/ttyS0 -t bare' and i set the exact parameters back after gpm
got upgraded, but i just couldn't get it working, i can move the mouse around,
i can select things with left button, but double click [used to be select-word]
doesn't work anymore, tripple click still works and selects the whole line,
right button [used to be paste] now produces only CTRL-@ '^@' characters, the
amount of the characters pasted is same as the amount of the characters
selected with left button.

well, to sum things up, i love potatoes ;), if it wasn't for my own idiocy i
think that the upgrade would go smoothly without any problems. :)
