It has a hard disk install script. Last time I used it ( a year or more
back), you booted the CD, opened a terminal and typed:
sudo /usr/local/bin/knx-hdinstall
(might be /usr/local/sbin, might be knx_hdinstall) and it went through
the procedure, once done a reboot and you were in a functional desktop.
A couple of problems I had:
1. The thing came up in German after the reboot. I may have screwed up
an initial commandline boot option, or that may have been changed since
I last did it. But I had to poke around until I came up with the control
center, then poke around to find the language setting, then log out and
back in.
2. Similarly, the keyboard came up in the wrong language. I had to
change that after setting the language.
I'm using Mepis now. It has a couple of edges to deal with, but that's
likely because it runs a lot of experimental and testing stuff. I've
used it exclusively for a couple of months now, and I love it. It's
another liveCD release, and it has an install script accessible from the
desktop. Plus, it defaults to english.
Both of these have options to save settings and such to removable
drives. I never tried USB on Knoppix, but I'd imagine it works with
that. Mepis definitely works with USB removables. Both will write to
floppies, ZIP, or even hard drives to save settings.
Knoppix can be found at linuxiso.org. I'm not sure if Mepis is there as
well (likely not), but you can locate it on freshmeat.net.
