kernel-patch-mppe is in poor shape. I was going to NMU it, but then somebody
else said they'd do it, but didn't CC the bug.

Support for an insecure, ill-thought-out and proprietary protocol? Useful
for interoperability perhaps, but by no means a "must have".
If the patch in the bug report above works for you, let me know and I might go
back to NMUing the package, since no work appears to have been done on it.
