Well, I am not in a position to decide this issue but
it seems not bad to enable type1 fonts by default.

One slight problem might be that xdvi still needs PK fonts
at present.  If xdvi also works with type1 fonts then there
is enough reason to enable type1 fonts by default.

It might be better to file BTS as wishlist if you strongly
think so ...
