I am confused now ;-)

I doubt this. Please try 'xdvi +expert' which turn DFF expert mode
and 'xdvi -expert' which turned ON expert mode (a bit confusing
and +expert is not documented but it is so, I believe)

'xdvi -expert' will display a narrower window (without buttons)
than the one displayed by 'xdvi +expert'.

Does 'xdvi +expert' show you buttons?

Does 'LD_PRELOAD=/usr/X11R6/lib/libXaw.so.6 xdvi' really
display xdvi window with buttons??? I dout it ...

I agreed with Kevin Ryde;
