I don't know if this has ever worked. It is clear, however, that the
current implementation searches from afm files using kpathsea's search
path kpse_afm_format.  That search paths can only be influenced by the
AFMFONTS variable, nothing else.

So, setting AFMFONTS should help.

For some reason, I did not like the new version. The old one works ok and
the new one is unnecessarily complicated by that "PS resource databases"
stuff in it.
