A minimal example reads:
hille@kloetzer:~ $ more a.tex
iiii
\bye
Running it through pdftex with the -interaction option gives me:
hille@kloetzer:~ $ pdftex -interaction batchmode a.tex
This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.141592-1.21a-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.4)
entering extended mode
and a usable pdf file.

Could you post the files for that "quick test"? I can't reproduce the
problem here.
