Hi,

The issue could be fixed relatively easily by updating `index.sty` so
that the `\CheckCommand` calls refer to the `\markboth` and
`\markright` as defined in the current latex.ltx.  But if nobody is
interested in maintaining that one, let's just update this bug report
to note that it is now recommended to use LaTeX package `imakeidx`
instead of `index`.  And I think `wontfix` seems appropriate.

Tag it wontfix then and let it rot.
