The file "linux" is the kernel. There is no extension, and if you look
at the contents of the install.bat file, you will see that it is looking
for a kernel file named linux. One thing you might be doing wrong is
that you don't have all the Linux files in the same DOS directory. Also,
you can't do this from a DOS Window - you have to be in Real DOS Mode.

I guess it's also possible that some drivers/programs that you are
loading from autoexec.bat or config.sys are interfering with Loadlin.
And be sure that smartdrv (disk caching for DOS) is not running when you
do this. You can see what's running in DOS with this command: mem /c/p

You will get a color screen and will be prompted each step of the way.
Nothing real fancy - but functional.

No - don't uncompress that file. The install program will do that for
you when the time comes. Just put/keep all those files in the same DOS
directory.
