What kind of CD-ROM is the Pioneer? If it's an ATAPI (IDE) CD-ROM,
plug it into the motherboard's IDE interface and it should be seen
automatically, like with my Mitsumi:
% dmesg | less
[...]
hda: WDC AC22000L, 1907MB w/256kB Cache, CHS=3876/16/63, DMA
hdc: FX600T, ATAPI CDROM drive
[...]
I use /dev/hdc to access it when programs ask where it is.
