I disagree. I took up Debian from scratch having been a W3.1 user.

If you have a quick net connection you can probably get away without a CD.
Either way I would recommend Hamm (version 2) - It's very stable, and due
for release soon. Some of the people on this list will I think burn CDs
for you.
