You can try the debian tutorial (at www.debian.org/~hp/ IIRC). It's not
complete, but the beginning is there.

Minimal X: xbase, xfntbase, xlib6g, xserver-vga16 xserver-svga

(The last depends on what video card you have. The svga-server
 works with most cards.)

Mark these packages for installation in dselect (type +) and
choose install.

When they are installed, use "XF86Setup" to tune the configuration.
