yes, the c&t chipset (IIRC 65550) works very well in my thoshiba 210cs, too. 
i only had some little trouble with setting up my x (the reason was missing 
doc´s), but playing arround with the options in xf86setup solve this
(i´m thinking the problems depend on the dstn-display)

i´m happy, too -- so happy that i use my notebook as (mail-)server in the moment --
temporaryly until my real server works well again ;-) 

i didn´t need the tecra-disk i´ve booted with a ms-dos-disk (with cd-rom
driver) and started installation per loadlin

ps: my expirience with svgatextmode were mostly bad (on my notebook 800x600): 
the maximum resulution was 80x60 but with big black beams on top
and bottom of the screen
on my desktop-computer (with ati-mach64) i got a maximum resolution IIRC of 132x80

but in both cases i prefer to work with x - so i didn´t fix the
notebook-problem


pps: i heard from a friend that there´s a way to enable higher-resolutions
in the kernel if your graphics-card is vesa 2.1 compatible but i haven´t
fount a howto or something yet!
