Q: Problems to get network connection up (Debian 2.0 + NE2000 on HP Vectra 7)

Hi,
For some (unknown to me) reason I cannot get the net connection to work.
I have done this many times before without any problem (on other systems,
installling debian 0.96 to 1.3) but now I cannot figure out what's wrong:
I am using the disks for i386 of July 1998, with a ne2000 (recognized by the
kernel) on a HP Vectra 7 (Pentium II, Triton chipset).
When I "ping localhost" (on the loopback) everything is OK,
but when I ping any of the others machines on the ethernet LAN
I cannot get through (100% packets rejected). The same when I try to ping
from the others nodes to this one.

I am not sure, but I think I heard the ne module for the kernel 2.0.34 was buggy.
Is that true?
If not, can any of you give a me hint about waht the problem can be?
Thanks
