These are my 2 entries in /etc/modules:
#auto
serial

I've removed the /lib/modules/2.0.36  before each time I've recompiled and  installed
the newly compiled kernel-image.deb (except maybe the first time.)

Sounds to me like both of you feel plip module is being loaded up?
