It is something else. Gnome stands for GNU Network Object Model
Environment. It is (or will be when completed) a complete desktop based
on the GTK+ toolkit. There are already many apps, including some window
managers, using it.

Sometimes the kernel source packages have patches applied which haven't
yet shown up in the tar.gz. files. Otherwise, none.
