NIC card install problem

I'm trying to install Debian 2.1 but I'm running into
problems with the Ethernet card install. When I get to
the screen for installing the card it gives me a
choice
of two command line parameters:

    io = 0
    irq = 0

I enter "io=0x300 irq=10" and it comes back with this
message:

/lib/modules/1.0.36/net/3c509.o: symbol for parmeter io
is not found

Installation Failed

I've worked with it and found that it seems to be work
as long as I don't enter the "io" parameter. Am I
looking at a bug in the install here? Anybody know a
way that I can get this to work?
