You need to tell X it's a ps/2 intellimouse, strangely enough.  I've
got the following in my XF86config,

Section "Pointer"
   Protocol        "IMPS/2"
   Device          "/dev/mouse"
   BaudRate        1200
   Resolution      100
   ZAxisMapping    4 5
EndSection

which works quite nicely...  I forget where I found out this info,
probably on one of the Linux intellimouse websites.
