The removal script is screwed up.
/var/lib/dpkg/info/alsalib0.3.0.prerm reads:

#!/bin/sh -e
# Automatically added by dh_installdocs
if command -v install-docs >/dev/null 2>&1; then
	install-docs -r #PACKAGE#
fi
# End automatically added section


Looks like the skeleton was never modified.  I think
I just renamed it out of the way and the purge went OK.

Caveat: I don't really know what I'm talking about here.
You might wait until someone who does comments on it.
