I personally like magicfilter.  For a local printer, I think it is as
simple as

1. installing the package "magicfilter" 
2. running "magicfilterconfig"
3. answering the questions it asks.

I don't know how to do network printing.  Sorry.  I'm sure there is a way
to do it though.
