i've heard the argument that it's better leaving ethernet cards as
modules, since then they can be restarted without rebooting the comp.
Either way should work though. Are you specifying the correct options if
any are required? Is it a PnP card, and if so are you using isapnptools?

You should watch if there's any error messages returned above that final
error. If so, post them. You may also want to look at
/var/lib/dpkg/info/<package>.postinst, that is the postinst script that is
giving the error (where <package> is the specific name of the package)
