dpkg roadblock

Sequence:
1. Used dselect to select all web packages in order to remove them.
2. During the remove process received errors that the remove process was
unable to complete for some packages because there were files in /etc/php3,
/etc/htdig, and /usr/lib/apache.
3. Dutifully removed said files/directories.
4. Package list indicated apache, apache-common, and squid still installed
5. dpkg -r squid returns following error:

Removing squid ...
dpkg: error processing squid (--remove):
subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 1
dpkg: error while cleaning up:
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 squid

6. dpkg --status squid indicates squid is deinstall ok half-configured
7. dpkg --configure squid returns following error:

Setting up squid (2.1.2-1) ...
dpkg: error processing squid (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 squid

What did I do wrong and/or what can I do to fix it?
