Debian on 2nd hard disk

Hi,

I am considering installing Debian on a new hard
disk, which will be /dev/hdb .

I currently have W95/Red Hat Linux ( dual boot) on
/dev/hda. I use "Power Boot" as a boot manager and
LILO is in boot sector of the Linux root
partition.

My plan is not to install "another" LILO during
installation of Debian, but to add an appropriate
image stanza to the existent LILO to stipulate "
root=/dev/hdbx" for Debian.

I am not familiar with the debian installation
process. Is my plan feasible? Is there anything
else I should do or consider ?

Will I be able to create separate logical
partitions for /home, /usr, /usr/local and ? /opt
during the installation process? Is this
reasonable for a Debian installation ? Is the
concept of a separate /opt partition moot with
respect to Debian?

I'd appreciate any general comments and guidance.
I'm looking foward to becoming a member of the
Debian community.

Regards,

Howard Mann.
