I had an identical problem.
Try this:
Make sure you have the latest source-1.2.13 (-5 is what I have).
Do not compile ppp into the kernel. In this older set of source,
this will cause it to be compiled as a module.
Run these steps:
make dep
make clean
make install
make modules
make modules_install
Make sure that you have these modules listed in /etc/modules:
Module: #pages: Used by:
slip 2
ppp 5
slhc 2 [ppp]
dummy 1
(These do not appear in a lsmod listing until I have run pppd.)
I have:
||/ Name Version Rev Description
+++-============-=========-====-======================================
ii source 1.2.13 5 Linux kernel source.
ii ppp 2.2 1 Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) daemon.
Here is the /usr/src/linux/.config file that I generated:
