More on Adelphia cable (Help! I don't want to go back!)

(continuation of DHCP and Adelphia cable)

Right now I'm in the process of testing the connection to see if I can find
the problem, and the problem appears to be something with my linux setup.

Here's what I've done:

* I had a working setup using eth0 connected to a router to the internet
(machine name==white). The company providing this had slow access, so I
decided to switch to cablemodem.
* I have hooked up a win98 system sucessfully using DHCP on the connection,
and gotten FAST speeds (60/80k/sec) using a test download (DAOC update)
* I then hooked in my debian system's eth0 to the cablemodem, and put the
same parameters that were on the win98 system in the /etc/network/interfaces
file
* I have a win98 system attached to white via eth1 and IP masquerading
(setup worked with previous ISP). I try my test case (DAOC update) and get
dirt slow (1-2k/sec) speeds until I get disconnected.

I've eliminated almost everything that I can think of. The only possibility
I can see left is that there is some nuance in communicating with a
cablemodem that I'm missing!

Any help is appreciated-- The cablemodem is around 7x faster than my old
service!
