What kind of silly statement is that? Did you perhaps LOOK to see what
font xdm was configured to use, and whether that font was actually
available or not?
You'll note that in /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources is where xdm's font
configurations are. Of course, the man page would have told you where to
find that as well.
