USB 2.0 card reader not working

was just purchased by /me at Fry's.
Seemed like a good deal at the time, but I can't get it to work in
Etch. I''m using kernel 2.6.12-1-K7 ATM.
According to dmesg, it seems to recognize both the fact that the usb
reader is plugged in (which is a good sign) and when I plug in the
memory card into the slot (I have a Sandisk 1.0 GB Secure Digital
card) if I "tail -f /var/log/messages" I see that it's registering a
new device, but it still can't read the card's contents.
I'm getting messages like

Any ideas? I tested it with an (older) edition of Simply Mepis (running
kernel 2.6.10) still doesn't recognize the card, or won't read from it.
Over there, it'll report the "disk" as /dev/sda, rather than /dev/sdd.
I thought /dev/sda1 was the preferred device, right?
Forgive me, I am new at this stuff. I'm about to boott a latest knoppix
to see if that will work. Also I'll send an email to the product
manufacturer to see if their card reader supports Sandisk cards.
That *should* be doable, because this reader supports a wide variety of
USB card devices.
