OK, so that is exclusively a thing of the writer device, if I understand this

Some more trials:

DVD-R written with
xorriso -as cdrecord -sao -v dev="$drive" "$image"
on Stretch (Testing) on the real machine
results in seemingly successful write according to xorriso
but shown as blank by the OS and as written and closed by
$ xorriso -outdev /dev/sr0 -toc
xorriso 1.3.2 : RockRidge filesystem manipulator, libburnia project.

now the silly part:

after several attempts with open / close CD-tray on the computer
the DVD is eventually recognized by the OS and DVD menu can be
used and video shown, no matter if on virtual machine or real
machine, no matter if Jessie or Stretch.
But this does not work reliably (what in German we would call
a "Mal-Funktion = mal funktioniert's - mal nicht").

I put the same DVD into a LG harddisk/DVD recorder:
recorder takes long to recognize disk
then eventually sees it as blank and tries to format it
which fails, which in its restricted OS means it tries
to format the DVD ad nauseum until manually interrupted
by "open tray".

Does this hint at a faulty writer-drive which just barely works with
Linux lxjessie-vm 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt11-1+deb8u2 \
(2015-07-17) x86_64 GNU/Linux
on a virtual (maybe slower) machine
but does not work anymore with an "impatient" kernel
Linux lxcl01 4.0.0-2-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.0.8-2 (2015-07-22) x86_64 GNU/Linux
on a real (faster) machine
???
