firefox problem (OT?)

Buster, Firefox-esr, apt says there's nothing to update.
Where does Firefox store the bookmarks?
I had to re-install yesterday, and everything seems to be working. Except my years of web bookmarks are gone. And I can't tell where they are in the backups so I can put them back.
I put last week's .mozilla in my home dir, nothing. I grep'ed the .mozilla/firefox files for text that was in one of them, nope. I searched the web and got lots of hits, but they're all about restoring from a fully working browser.
Thoughts? Been there before?
