It's possible that environment variable is only set by certain desktops:

$ env | grep -i wayland
XDG_SESSION_TYPE=wayland
XAUTHORITY=/run/user/1000/.mutter-Xwaylandauth.B6TFI1
WAYLAND_DISPLAY=wayland-0
MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1

$ echo $XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP
GNOME
