i for one use 'kdm -debug 7 -nodaemon' for relatively obvious reasons.

indeed, with +sm it does not spin any more. but it does not change
anything.

for the hell of it, suddenly i can't fully reproduce the problem any
more. the xterm is still black, but it does accept keyboard input, and
after i ctrl-c'd kdm, things seem to be back to normal. ?-}
