Bug#328259: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg breaks screen resolution on my Toshiba laptop

I'm running testing. When I got the upgrade to xorg, it went cleanly
and restarted ok. Later I did a dpkg-reconfigure on the new package. I
gave default answers to all the questions, but dpkg failed to write
HorizSync and VertRefresh lines in the Monitor section of my
xorg.conf. As a result when I restarted, I was stuck with 640x480
configuration - my /var/log/Xorg.0.log is attached and as you can see,
the relevant lines read "hsync out of range" or "vrefresh out of
range". Manually adding reasonable ranges to xorg.conf worked fine but
it would be nice if dpkg could give sensible defaults for LCD screens.
