The only change I made myself was the elimination of Caps_lock

Mmh, I don't know what exactly caused this problem. I do modify now the
Capslock key in xorg.conf with

         Option          "XkbOptions"    "compose:caps"

This is even better than modifying it via ~/.Xmodmap. So as far as I am
concerned it's a change for the better.
