Hi!
I am just a Debian user who recently noticed this bug report...

Personally, I don't have any laptop with Intel IGP, but
I encountered a similar issue with a Savage-TwisterK-powered
laptop: I only had LCD when booting without anything
attached to the external VGA connector, or else only external VGA
when booting with videoprojector attached.
The Fn+F5 key combo used to work on sarge (and even on woody, IIRC),
but does not seem to have any effect when using current lenny...

After some research, I re-discovered s3switch, which I installed
long ago and forgot about (since Fn+F5 was enough on sarge), and I
successfully used it to switch between LCD and LCD+externalVGA.

Does the similar i810switch package help in your case, as an
alternative method to enable external VGA output?
