remove the call to clear_console ?
Yes!  Without clear_console the problem is gone.  This suggests that the
double VT swich performed by clear_console triggers it.
OK, I can reproduce this by running chvt manually instead of clear_console ("chvt 2; chvt 1"). clear_console should maybe be clever picking the vt it switches to but that and other topic I guess.

Merging the two bugs.
