It's neither correct nor incorrect. For status notifiers, there's an
appropriate setting which alters the behavior of left-click,
simultaneously affecting the right-click action. The checkbox is "Menu
is primary action". Either tick or untick it depending on your
preference. I, for one, like being able to access both menus, so I
always leave it checked.

That's because Pidgin is placed inside the systray and is not a status
notifier. Again, it is subjective. If you really believe this can be
improved or is wrong, please forward this report upstream as a feature
request.
