There is no support in APT for cross-grading, fwiw APT does support cross-grading packages as while not common, it can certainly happen in normal operations. The script in question here was a GSoC project and is packaged, so while I haven't tried it, I have reasonable hope that it is not too hackish (at least not more than is needed for this type of operation). And if someone/Debian wants to support it, it seems better to do this in an independent leaf package than to bundle it up with src:apt which is harder to change to include the unavoidable workarounds. usrmerge as a sort of crossgrade isn't implemented in apt either after all for much the same reasons (and hopefully on a similar step on the hackish scale – not used that either yet). > It's certainly not release critical. I would reason that it sounds like an undesirable change (7. "changing relations between packages". M-A isn't given as an example, but the field certainly does that). python-apt is a key package (I think) so we would need an unblock after the upload anyhow, so I would ask for pre-approval (but I am not volunteering for either – python isn't my cup of tea in general).
