I am sure your excitement can be put to good use basically everywhere inside the project, so this is more a question of what you are interested in like e.g. - programming: c, c++, go, rust, haskell, perl, php, javascript, … - non-programming: websites, server upkeep, press, l10n & i18n, … - buzzword technologies: big data, cloud, machine learning, … - packaging software for Debian vs. software working with packages - biohacking against Covid vs. reaching the stars via rover firmware - and many many more… In contributing to open source projects it is best to see what interests you as that can be an important source of long term motivation as nothing is as high priority and exciting as something which excites you personally. ☺ You have e.g. probably already encountered a bug or missing feature somewhere… see if you can fix it! It might be that your specific choice turns out too hard at first – no problem, pick something else and revisit later: Even working on something and figuring out its too hard for me at the moment is an important skill to learn and master! I had many grant ideas at first, but in the end my first contribution to Debian APT turned out to be a teeny tiny one-line change[0]… could not have been any more scared and proud at the same time though even with a million lines of changes. 😉 So, just pick something – anything – and try. At worst, you will learn something new. If you are really desperate for ideas at some point, you can install & run the "how-can-i-help" package. debian-mentors@lists.debian.org can also be a good place to ask questions if you have any, it is mostly about packaging though. There are mailing lists, IRC channels and co for many different aspects of Debian, so if they interest you, feel free to join them. > I alreaady clone the apt project Nice! If you decide that this area of Debian strikes your fancy feel free to ask questions here or on our #debian-apt IRC channel (on OFTC) were the team usually hangs around. Good luck, have fun & happy hacking, David Kalnischkies [0] https://bugs.debian.org/433007#39
