Re: [gopher] Question

Hi NN:

Dunno, but here goes my opinion:

  1. Gopher, as a TCP/IP application layer protocol , it has its own port dedicated ( useful if you dare to play with iptables ).
  2. To me, is more organized, in the aspect to classify and present your documents ( no distraction), and the read-only ability ( if wanted ).
  3. Serving as a publishing tool, gopher is quite useful (think of  presenting and sharing news, receipts, research papers, et al ).
  4. Think  also of multimedia content or the old CD-ROM support: work like that but at a minimum.
  5. The way it works from server to server (proxies ), is also unique.

At least but not last: You have no obligation to user the Gopher, if it does not fit your purposes ;)

have a nice day.

For what reasons is Gopher needed if there are FTP and HTTP?
