Ok, since I don't expect glibc is going to change it's output could the tests 
be changed to be able to deal with this particular kind of output?

Same as above.

OK, so this is a real failure. Since this is on a standard Debian i386 system 
it probably deserves to be looked at by someone with a clue(tm).
