potato testing: xdm vs gpm, samba changed?
I just noticed that gpm WILL let me login as root (and
give me a warning message) same behavior as redhat.
So I guess redhat was using gpm all along. Also gpm
starts gnome-session.
I discovered that sawmill has no default action to
show windows reduced to icons, so these tasks are
lost. However I also discovered how to start the
task bar on gnome panel. The task bar should be there
by default I would think, at least if you are going to
use sawmill. I really like sawmill. It's not (yet)
as slick as enlightenment, but MUCH less hogish on cpu
and memory. I even found a nice LCARS theme for
sawmill (not to mention a sexy 7of9 background).
Potato is looking real good here now.
I am having problems with samba. For some reason
samba on potato won't allow windows to re-connect on
login (it would under slink). I also sometimes have
to stop and restart samba to get windows to see the
computer under the workgroup, but windows is so flakey
finding even windows computers under workgroup I don't
think samba is at fault. Still it so far looks like
the samba package under slink was more stable.
