Problems with exim and kernel 2.2.17-pre6?

I've just found a lovely little problem. Exim v3.12-10 and kernel
2.2.17-pre6 appear to not like each other. Exim stops accepting mail
from local processes with the error:

Message abandoned: Input read error (Permission denied) while
receiving message from steve

I went through checking everything on the system - I'd just done a
potato upgrade and everything else seemed fine. As a last resort I
fell back to the older 2.2.14 kernel I had been using previously, and
then all started working again. I know that 2.2.16+ has the
permissions fix in - is exim relying on broken kernel behaviour, I
wonder?
