The readline-2.1.tar.gz from one of the GNU mirror sites contains in
readline-2.1/Makefile.in:

	MAJOR=          3
	MINOR=          .0

	SHARED_READLINE = libreadline.so.$(MAJOR)$(MINOR)

The lib/readline bundled with bash-2.01.1 seems to contain no
instructions, to build a shared libreadline.
